Use Me Wisely

Use Me Wisely

The items that were used in the animation all point to different uses of mobile devices. Flip through the images to see the uses and an app to check out.

Games

Games

There are so many educational games in the app store for both Android and Apple devices. Their education stores have great collections. Where should you start? Check out some of TVO Kids free apps.

Reading

Reading

Although I still love a physical book, there are so many ways we can engage today's readers with our devices. Download sample chapters in ibooks or Kindle or have a book come to life like the The Fantastic Flying Books.

Highlighting

Highlighting

When I first started my Masters program I found it difficult to keep track of all the readings. There are amazing annotation apps that will allow you to highlight, annotate and search later on when you revisit. I use the Goodreader app.

Art

Art

Have you ever wanted to create your own digital art? A watercolour painting or a quick sketch? There are many many different artist tools for all devices from an Android to a Surface tablet. My favourite is PAPER.

Collect-Curate

Collect-Curate

Curating: collecting resources, organizing and annotating is an important skill. Whether sharing resources with students or having students curate themselves, tackk.com is a great site to check out.

Book Making

Book Making

Book making is often messy, tedious and long but with tools like Book Creator we can now create multi-modal books with images, text, video and sound. We can be co-authors together and revisit to edit over time.

Movie Making

Movie Making

Being able to document learning with the built in camera in tablets and smart phones is a great first step. Next Step: become your own movie producer. There are lots of favourites out there iMovie being one. On an iPad try Adobe Voice while it is still free!

Social Media

Social Media

Mobile devices allow us to connect, strengthening existing relationships, building new ones. My favourite tool to connect students in the classroom (especially as they are first learning the ropes) is kidblog.org.

Tunes

Tunes

Of course being able to listen to music and podcasts can be a great tool for learning on it's own. Being able to capture audio, create our own soundtracks, audio podcasts and musical creations takes it to the next level. Check out the Spreaker app.

Stop Motion Animation

Stop Motion Animation

An old technique made simpler by modern tools. There are apps for every platform! For the instagram clip I used Stop Motion Recorder. How can you not try an app that lets you clap to take a picture!

The objects in the animation were chosen because they point to the many uses of mobile devices in the classroom. Click on an image below to see more details and learn about an app you can explore. The link will be highlighted in purple at the bottom of the page.

How will you use me?

This fall some of us in the #peel21st community will be doing a BLOG HOP of our favourite tools. Each individual will be choosing a new tool to write a post about. We will then all post them the first evening and link to the collection of blog posts.
